The Ultimate Hair Routine

The ultimate hair routine for long, luscious, healthy hair.

My mom has always told me that hair is everything.

It’s a statement I’ve taken very seriously. Over time, I’ve realized that to look your best, you don’t necessarily need a full face of makeup—what truly makes a difference is clean, healthy, beautifully styled hair. When your hair looks good, everything else feels effortless.

But achieving great hair doesn’t start when you step into the shower. In fact, it begins long before that.

In this article, I’ll walk you through a step-by-step routine that will help you care for your hair properly and build habits that lead to stronger, healthier, and more beautiful hair over time. By following these simple steps, you can start working toward the hair of your dreams.

Pre-shower routine:

Oiling:

Hair oiling is a simple but powerful habit for maintaining long, healthy hair. When the scalp is nourished, hair follicles receive better circulation and nutrients, which helps support stronger hair growth. Oiling also protects the hair shaft by locking in moisture and reducing dryness and breakage—one of the main reasons hair struggles to grow long.

Rosemary oil is especially popular because it helps stimulate the scalp and improve circulation, which can support healthier and thicker-looking hair over time. Many people like using the Mielle Rosemary Mint Hair Oil because it combines rosemary with nourishing oils that strengthen both the scalp and hair.

Start by parting your hair into sections and applying a few drops of Mielle Rosemary Mint Hair Oil directly to the scalp, then gently massage it in for a few minutes to stimulate circulation.

Next, run a small amount of oil through the mid-lengths and ends of your hair to protect the strands and prevent breakage. Since the ends are the most fragile part of the hair, applying oil there helps keep them hydrated and healthy.

Leave the oil in for 3 to 4 hours or overnight for a deeper treatment.

Scalp Stimulation:

After applying rosemary oil to the scalp, stimulating the area can help enhance its benefits. Using a bamboo hair brush, gently massage or brush the scalp for about 5–10 minutes. This helps increase blood circulation, allowing the rosemary oil to better nourish the hair follicles and support healthier hair growth.

Use soft, slow movements across the scalp rather than pulling on the hair. This step not only stimulates the follicles but also helps distribute the oil evenly through the hair. Regular scalp stimulation like this can help create a healthier scalp environment and support stronger, longer hair over time.

Shower Routine:

The second part of the routine focuses on what happens in the shower: shampoo, conditioner, and hair masks. This step is essential because the products you use here directly affect the health and strength of your hair. Many people overlook this, but using the wrong shampoo can strip away your scalp’s natural oils, leaving hair dry, brittle, and more prone to breakage. A good shampoo should cleanse the scalp without being overly harsh, while a nourishing conditioner helps restore moisture, smooth the cuticle, and protect the strands. Adding a hair mask once or twice a week can take this step even further by deeply hydrating and strengthening the hair. Choosing the right products for your hair type can make a huge difference in keeping your hair healthy, shiny, and resilient over time.

Shampoo:

When washing your hair, it’s best to shampoo twice and focus only on the roots, since that’s where oil and buildup accumulate the most. Using a scalp massager while you shampoo can help gently exfoliate the scalp, improve circulation, and ensure the shampoo cleans deeply without needing to scrub harshly with your nails.

High End Shampoo

Olapex:

The Olaplex No.4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo is a great option because it cleans the hair gently while also helping repair damage. Unlike many shampoos that only remove oil and buildup, Olaplex works to strengthen the hair from within using bond-building technology that helps reconnect broken bonds caused by heat styling, coloring, or bleaching. This helps reduce breakage and leaves the hair looking healthier, smoother, and stronger over time.

Morrocon Oil:

Another great shampoo is Moroccan oil, which is known for its nourishing formulas rich in argan oil. Shampoos like Moroccanoil Moisture Repair Shampoo are designed to cleanse the hair while restoring hydration and strength gently. The argan oil in the formula is packed with antioxidants, fatty acids, and nutrients that help repair damaged strands, improve elasticity, and add shine without weighing the hair down. This makes it a great option for dry, color-treated, or heat-damaged hair that needs both moisture and repair.

Kerastase:

The Kérastase Bain Satin Shampoo is a great option for an everyday shampoo because it focuses on nourishing and hydrating the hair while gently cleansing it. It’s especially suitable for normal to slightly dry hair, helping restore moisture without weighing the hair down. The formula works to maintain the hair’s natural balance, leaving it feeling soft, smooth, and easy to manage while also enhancing its natural shine.

Drugstore Shampoo:

Monday:

Monday Haircare Shampoo is a great drugstore option because it offers gentle cleansing while still nourishing the hair. Many formulas are sulfate-free, pH-balanced, and designed to be mild on the scalp, helping clean the hair without stripping away its natural oils. Ingredients like coconut oil, shea butter, and proteins help hydrate, smooth frizz, and support healthier-looking hair, making it a good affordable choice for everyday use.

Odele:

Odele Shampoo is a great, affordable option because it provides salon-quality hair care at a drugstore price. Many of their formulas are sulfate-free and designed to cleanse the hair gently without stripping away its natural oils. Ingredients like amino acids, botanical extracts, and moisturizing agents help support healthier, shinier hair while improving manageability and reducing damage. It’s a simple, effective choice for everyday washing that keeps hair clean, balanced, and nourished.

L'Oreal Elvive:

L’Oréal Elvive Shampoo is a great drugstore option because it combines effective cleansing with ingredients that help nourish and protect the hair. Many formulas in the Elvive line are designed to target specific hair needs—such as repairing damage, boosting shine, or adding hydration—while still being affordable and easy to find. Ingredients like hyaluronic acid, oils, or strengthening complexes help keep the hair hydrated, smooth, and healthier-looking without weighing it down.

Clarifying Shampoo

Using a clarifying shampoo every couple of weeks is an important step in maintaining healthy hair and scalp. Over time, products like oils, dry shampoo, styling creams, and even minerals from hard water can build up on the hair and scalp, making hair feel heavy, dull, or greasy. A clarifying shampoo removes this buildup and deeply cleanses the scalp, allowing your regular shampoos, conditioners, and treatments to work more effectively. One of the best options is the OUAI Detox Shampoo, because it deeply cleans the scalp without leaving hair feeling stripped or dry. It removes product buildup, excess oil, hard water minerals, and pollution that can weigh hair down and make it look dull, while ingredients like apple cider vinegar help rebalance the scalp and keratin smooths and strengthens the hair. Used about every two weeks, it resets the hair, leaving it lighter, shinier, and much more manageable while keeping the scalp balanced.

Conditioner:

High end:

Olaplex

The Olaplex No.5 Bond Maintenance Conditioner is a great conditioner because it uses Olaplex’s patented bond-building technology to repair damaged hair at a molecular level. Hair becomes damaged when the internal disulfide bonds in the hair structure break due to heat styling, coloring, or chemical treatments. Olaplex’s technology works by reconnecting and strengthening these broken bonds, which helps restore the hair’s structure. As a result, the conditioner not only hydrates and softens the hair but also improves strength, reduces breakage, and leaves hair smoother, shinier, and healthier over time.

K18 Damage Shield Protective Conditioner:

The K18 Damage Shield Protective Conditioner is definitely a bit of a splurge, but it’s honestly so worth it if you want stronger, healthier hair. What makes it special is K18’s biotech peptide technology, which helps replenish lost proteins and strengthen the hair structure while you condition. Instead of just coating the hair like many conditioners, it actually helps reinforce the hair fiber and protect it from everyday damage like heat styling, UV exposure, and environmental stress. I recommend it because it not only makes hair feel incredibly soft and smooth, but it also helps prevent future damage while improving shine and manageability—so you’re treating your hair and protecting it at the same time. It’s one of those conditioners that feels luxurious but also genuinely improves the health of your hair over time.

Drugstore:

L'Oreal ELvive:

The L'Oréal Paris Elvive Total Repair 5 Conditioner is a great drugstore conditioner because it delivers really impressive quality for such an affordable price. Even though it’s budget-friendly, the formula is designed to help repair common signs of hair damage like dryness, breakage, and dullness while leaving hair soft and smooth. Many of the Elvive conditioners use ingredients like ceramides, vitamins, and strengthening agents to help reinforce the hair fiber and improve shine and manageability.

Hair Mask:

The Gisou Honey Gloss Ceramide Therapy Hair Mask is definitely a bit of a splurge, but it’s absolutely worth it if you want deeply nourished, glossy hair. What makes it so special is its blend of Mirsalehi honey, ceramides, and hyaluronic acid, which work together to intensely hydrate, strengthen the hair fiber, and smooth the cuticle for incredible shine. The honey helps lock in moisture while the ceramides reinforce the hair structure, leaving hair softer, stronger, and noticeably smoother without feeling heavy. I love recommending it because it feels like a real treatment rather than just a regular hair mask—after using it, hair looks healthier, shinier, and much more manageable, making it one of those luxury products that truly delivers results.
